Run Less Run Faster App Reviews

It would be nice to include the 5k novice and 5k intermediate programs from the book, as well as the key movements and key stretches and the strength training movements. Its the bare bones of the program, would like to see some more substance to this app.

The half-marathon training schedule is different from the book!

I already own the book, but calculating the paces for different training programs has aways been time consuming. Thats why I downloaded this app. However, when I set it up for a half marathon training program, I discovered that its different from whats in the book. Its an 18 week program in the book, but only 16 weeks in the app. That seems to be source of the problem. Week 16 in the app is the same as week 18 in the book, 15=17, and 14=16. But then, week 13 in the app is the same as week 14 in the book, 12=13, and so on until week 8 in the app, which has a different interval workout than the books week 9, but is otherwise the same. Week 7 in the app calls for 4x1200 instead of 6. The book and app remain separated by 1 week until the apps week 3, which is similar to the books week 3 except for a different interval workout. Weeks 2 and 1 are the same in the book and app. I dont know if these are errors, or if they represent intentional changes to the half marathon program since my edition of the book was published (2007). If they were intentional changes, it would be nice if they disclosed that up front. But as long as you dont might a slightly different training schedule, it looks like it will do the job. I just wish it would calculate the interval paces in min/mile instead of just the time to complete each interval.

Good book companion

!!!

Poor application

expensive application. lack of pace (min / km) in key run # 1. for now I treat this purchase as an investment and I wait for the next patches and updates.

Great but...

So glad this is finally available. No more having to lookup the FIRST tables on my kindle before runs. However I was really hoping that they would have included meter-to-mile pace conversions for the track repeats. I always have to lookup the conversions online before I do my speed work due to the way Garmin shows pace. Never quite understood why the book didnt include this. Also the app barks at you if you enter a marathon date inside of 16-weeks. If you run marathons with any frequency, its rare that you find yourself training for a race that is 16 weeks out. Finally, make certain you put down Saturday as your race date even if your race is on Sunday, otherwise the app will throw your schedule off by one week (cut you short by one week). Other than that, its a nice quick reference for your runs if you follow the FIRST system.

Running To the Next Level!

Great to see that its now mobile. Whether running on the track/road or a treadmill, I can switch from minutes/mile to mph. Its really quick to switch between units. Love the speed workouts, the paces and having the cross-training workouts will take my fitness to the next level. This app is all I need to get faster!

Confused

Just uploaded this. Put in info for half marathon in April. It came back with a program that starts at 8 miles. This is def wrong esp for an inexperienced runner. I used the book for my first 5k and it worked beautifully. Want to do a 13.1 now, but no way can I begin at 8 miles without injury. Im really disappointed.

What am I missing?

Ditto on other review: starts at 8 miles for half marathon? More than that; it lists the same data that is in the book but I still have to MANUALLY LOAD DATA into 2nd app like Run Keeper? Where is the "Start" button that loads this all? Run keeper at least has intervals and plans all pre built. Get me version 2.

Time saver

Love that this app calculates paces for the FIRST runs. It was very time consuming to flip through the book to lay out a training plan. But, please add the 10 mile race plan from your web site to the app! Regarding some of the other reviewers...they need to read the book. This is a planning aid for those who are following a very specific training plan for performance improvement. You need to have a solid base built up before doing these plans...that is why it assumes you can do an 8 mile long run off the bat. If you cant, get yourself a couch to or beginner plan and come back to FIRST to do time goal oriented training after you have a few races under your belt.

Getting Better Thanks for the Updates

Added marathon pace on race day which the book gives. Thanks for updating the app and integrating feedback

Convenient

Very convenient not having to haul my book around. Access to my training schedule anytime. A few discrepancies noted: week 4 final 20 miler pace is wrong. Week 7 speed workout does not match book.

Needs to sync with my IBook

Its a great quick guide, but for the runs, it always says reference a page number in the "Run Less Run Faster" book. When I click on it, it just tries to get me to buy the book that I already have downloaded on my IPhone. It would be great if the two of them could sync with each other. Especially because the page it tells you to reference is not the same on your phone as it is in the paperback or IPad

Needs More

1. Need to remove references from the book. I want to use the APP so I dont have to carry the book with me. 2. Needs to incorporate features of other running APPs: timer, GPS, workout history, pace keeper thoroughly the workout. Otherwise this is just a good calculator, so that I dont have to reference the tables in the book. Works for treadmill running, but not for running outside without another APP or device.

Great app

Just got this, and am thrilled to have my workouts with me everywhere I go! Ive been using this program for 4 years, and my book is getting kind of shabby :) My only complaint is that the workouts are given based on past performance times. I would prefer if you could also set them based on goal marathon times, like the plans in the back of the book.

Almost

Overall a good companion app to the book. It would be great if you could make comments on the runs. Also, if you could store multiple training plans so that you could plan ahead for different runs. Keep the updates coming!

Nice companion app to book

The app serves as a very nice companion app to the book. It serves its intended purpose well. The one enhancement suggestion would be to show both min/mi and mph without having to re-setup. Many runners normally think of their pace in min/mile. However, when using a treadmill we may have to use mph if the equipment doesnt allow us to switch units. I find that most of my "track repeats" and many of my tempo runs are done on the treadmill while my long runs are outside. While setting up again isnt a huge hassle, it would be nice to not have to do this step.

No functionality

I expected more for this app. It simply repeats the same information from the tables in the book with no added value. The running program is good for training but what you are buying with this app is simply an advertisement to buy the book. Note to developer: timing and distance tracking, at a minimum, would be very helpful so you could measure your performance against the prescribed runs.

does not include intermediate 5K plan

App does not include intermediate 5K plan, which was my whole reason for purchasing it. Annoying because now I have to use the book anyway, defeating the purpose of the app. If you are starting to run again at intermediate level (or beginning - the beginner 5k is missing too!) then just stick with the book and do your own calculations.

Good companion to book

This is a good companion to the book and might even replace it if you already understand the principles in the book. To those frustrated by the supposedly too-demeaning opening long run: read the book. You are supposed to begin these programs with a base level of fitness. 8 miles is not too much to ask.

Seems like its only half done

Its nice to have the training modules on my phone. But you cannot use this App without referencing the book. For example, none of the cross-training or strength exercises are in the program -- just a reference to a page in the book! If I wanted to carry the book everywhere , I wouldnt have paid for the app!!!!!
